Long Term Overview

Y5 Curriculum Map

Reading

Children will receive a reading book, that will  be changed as they become confident in reading it and complete an Accelerated Reader quiz.  The quiz allows the child to showcase their knowledge of the book and ensures they have retained the required learning, before moving to another book. We will hear the children read throughout the week on a one-to-one basis. Children will also read to adults during other activities, such as Guided Reading. The reading books that are sent home should be practised regularly at home so that the children become fluent and confident, when reading.

Homework

In Year 5,  children will receive spelling and timetables homework weekly, alongside their reading books. This is to enhance their learning in reading/maths – the children will be taught sounds and words throughout the week.

PE

Year 5 children will be completing all PE lessons on a Monday and Tuesday. The required uniform for PE is shorts/ tracksuit trousers and a t-shirt.

Class Dojo

Within Year 5, Class Dojo is used to reward children where they can collect Dojo points. It should also be used to communicate with the teacher about your child.

Learning This Term

Year 5 have had the chance to learn about animals including humans through science lessons. We learned about how humans change through life from babies to old age. We talked about the effects of aging on our bodies, bones and eyesight. We have learned about the formal elements of art looking at the role of architects and architecture. During DT sessions we are looking at healthy eating and how to make a healthy bolognaise sauce. We have been lucky enough to have Sarah come into school to cook with us, to make  meat and vegetarian options.  Our PE lessons have been spent swimming and taking part in cricket and athletic activities. We have looked at Greece and the Mediterranean Sea through our geography lessons which will lead onto learning about Ancient Greece during our history lessons. Through RE lessons, we have learnt about Judaism using artefacts and information books to support our learning. We have been fortunate to have attended careers conversations with the RAF and an astronaut, we will be talking with people regarding careers in football and gaming. We also have a careers fair coming up where we will have the opportunity to chat to a variety of companies who will talk to us about future employment.
