Long Term Overview
Reading
Children will receive an ebook, that will be changed every Monday. They will be practicing their phonics to progress further through the Little Wandle reading programme. We will hear the children read everyday on a one-to-one basis. Children will also read to adults during other activities, such as group reading. The reading books that are assigned weekly should be practiced regularly at home so that the children become fluent and confident when reading.
Every week we visit the school library on a Wednesday afternoon
Our class read: The Owl that is Afraid of the Dark
Homework
Every Friday the children will be given either a piece of English or Mathematics homework. This may be written or a practical task. It will always link to the work that we are completing, encouraging the children to rehearse a skill that they have been taught. It will never be a new concept. Homework must be returned to school on a Monday morning. In Autumn 2, the children will be given 10 spellings to learn every Friday and a mental maths skill to rehearse. These will be tested the following Friday. The spellings and mental maths will be given on a sheet of paper in their book bag which can be kept at home and practiced.
PE
Year 2 children will be completing all PE lessons on a Monday and a Wednesday. The required uniform for PE is dark shorts, white top and plimsols.
Class Dojo
Within Year 2, Class Dojo is used to reward children where they can collect Dojo points. It should also be used to celebrate your child with the teacher.

Learning This Term
In Autumn Term we have been settling into Year 2 and learning the expectations of our new classroom. In English we have been focussing on Pirates! In English, the children have completed some wonderful fictional stories and using capital letters, full stops, conjunctions, expanded noun phrases and exclamation marks. They will explore Pirates further in our History topic – H ow do people travel around world? (before aircraft?) Looking at a timeline of sea explorers – Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Francis Drake, Walter Raleigh, Captain Cook, Henry Hudson and Ellen MacArthur. Use range of information to find out about life of pirates – ships, food, roles. Research and learn about famous pirates and even go on a school trip to the Captain Cook Museum! In Maths, Year 2 have been focussing on Place Value and writing 2-digit numbers.
In Science, Year 2 have been learning about Everyday Materials. We started this topic off at the Life Centre in Newcastle. This helped the children understand all about materials. As a class we have completed some brilliant Science experiments.
