This term, in Year 5, the children will be learning about Mexico. They will be taking a trip to Chiquitos and learning about Mexican food. From this, they will write instructions and create their own recipe books. Within their topic lessons, the children will be learning about the location of Mexico and the comparing the culture to their own. Within science, the children will be learning about light and changing materials. They will compete a range of experiments linked to this to develop their skills in working scientifically.
During spring term, Year 5 will be learning about the Space Race. The children will learn about the different planets in our solar system and research areas associated with space. Within literacy, the children will be reading Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets. They will base their writing activities around this to include potion instructions, adventure stories and diary entries. The children will also get the chance to see the solar system when a planetarium visits school.
This term, in Year 5, the topic is Vicious Vikings. The children will learn about myths and legends in literacy and Viking saga songs in music. Within Geography, Year 5 will look at the origins of the Vikings and the journeys that they had taken. They will create their own Viking sculpture in art and will learn about the Northern Saints, within R.E., taking a trip to Auckland Castle to explore this further. As part of European Day of Languages, Year 5 learnt a Norwegian nursery rhyme called Baa Baa Lille Lam. They sang this during our assembly.
