Read Write Inc.
We use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) scheme in school, from Reception to the end of Key Stage 1. This is a structured reading and phonics programme, which equips children with secure phonic knowledge in order to help them to become confident, fluent readers. We have been very pleased with the success of the programme and this is reflected in the steady increase in the number of children who have passed the Year 1 Phonics Test in the last 3 years.
We also use the follow-up programme for those children who have completed the RWI programme, called Literacy & Language. Again, this structured programme enables children to make good progress in reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling to the end of Key Stage 2. We know this is having a positive impact because the progress our children make from Key Stage 1 to the end of Key Stage 2 is now in line with or above National Average!
If you would like to find out more about RWI or Literacy and Language, please contact Mrs Smith, who is the RWI Manager or please go to the official Read Write Inc. website:
Reading Around the World
We encourage our children to read at every opportunity and believe that working together in partnership with parents and carers greatly improves children’s reading skills. Children are given reading books to take home and share on a regular basis and for every signature, an ‘air mile’ is earned for the class, to reach an agreed destination. When the class have reached their destination, they celebrate with a themed afternoon (such as a film, food from that country etc). So, please encourage your child to read with you and help them to earn class air miles!
We have a wonderful school library which is open for parents and carers to come in and share a book (and have a coffee!) with your child before school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. We even have a parent section, where you are welcome to borrow a book for yourself!
